We are seeking a detail-oriented Senior Indirect Tax Analyst to manage sales and use tax compliance operations. This role will focus on preparing and coordinating data for outsourced sales tax return processing through Vertex, managing exemption/resale certificate administration, and handling state sales tax registration requirements. The ideal candidate combines technical tax knowledge with strong organizational skills and experience working with tax technology platforms.

Preference for hybrid in Southfield, MI or Birmingham, AL

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Tax Leadership in the continuous development of technological tax automation for improved scalability, accuracy, and reporting.
  • Assist with sales tax return preparation and compliance by gathering data for submission to Vertex for outsourced sales tax return preparation, review completed returns for accuracy prior to approval and payment processing, ensure timely and accurate filings of sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions, and reconcile sales tax data from the accounting systems to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Administer the exemption certificate process, including collection, validation, and maintenance of resale and other exemption certificates.
  • Ensure exemption certificates meet state-specific requirements and maintain proper documentation.
  • Manage the sales tax registration process for new entities, locations, and jurisdictions as nexus is established.
  • Prepare and submit sales tax license applications and documentation to state tax authorities as necessary.
  • Stay current on sales tax law changes, rate updates, and regulatory developments across relevant jurisdictions
  • Research and respond to sales tax questions from internal stakeholders
  • Assist with special projects including nexus studies, process improvements, gathering information related to tax audits/inquiries, review of personal property tax filings, and developing standard operating procedures as it relates to indirect tax

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.  CPA candidate or active CPA is preferred.
  • 4-6+ years of experience in sales and use tax compliance.
  • Strong understanding of sales and use tax principles, nexus concepts, and multi-state compliance requirements.
  • Advanced Proficiency in Excel and Tax Software is required, including advanced formulas and pivot tables to analyze large data sets.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills required.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of state tax registration portals and procedures and project management experience working with outsourced tax service providers is preferred.
